Dear Parents, Guardians, and Community Members,

 

Welcome back to a new school year!  As the new principal of Solano Elementary I am excited to start the new school year and eager to engage in new learning and creating a relationship with my new community of learners, thinkers, and leaders.

 

Our mission at Solano Elementary will continue to be: Learn.Ÿ Love.Ÿ Lead.  We provide a safe, nurturing and intellectually stimulating learning environment, which promotes academic excellence and prepares all students to be self-motivated, life-long learners.  Using the Common Core State Standards, Solano provides a rigorous academic program focused on developing 21st century skills, problem solving fluency, and collaborative learning.  Students are taught to work together and encouraged to participate in evidence-based discourse.

 

We are proud of the long-lasting relationships we have forged over the years - between the school and the community, between students and staff, and between families and staff.  Solano is a home away from home to staff and students alike.  The way to achieve this feeling is through love.  Our school is a place where students are loved and valued.  Students and families are welcomed to school each and every day.  You are an integral part of the Solano family, just as Solano Elementary is an integral part of this historic community.  Family and community connections continue to be a priority.  Working with local organizations provides students the opportunity to be involved in their community and develop a deeper understanding and appreciation of community service.

 

Solano Avenue Elementary School will continue to be a Leader in Me school.  The Leader In Me is based on Stephen Covey’s 7 Habits of Highly Effective People and promotes a culture of leadership, where students learn to be responsible for their own actions and their own learning.  As students learn and apply the seven habits they strengthen their intrapersonal and interpersonal skills, problem-solving techniques, and their ability to work on a team, which have been identified as the top 21st century skills for success.  This philosophy promotes positive relationships among and between peers, adults, and families.

 

Our Solano vision is: “A community of empowered learners, innovative thinkers, and courageous leaders.”  We are committed to helping all children achieve their maximum potential. When children are successful, school becomes a place where they want to be, rather than a place where they have to be.  The staff at Solano Avenue Elementary School is dedicated to providing varied opportunities for each and every student to excel in academics, leadership, attendance, the arts, and physical fitness. The three most important things you can do to help us achieve our vision are:

  • Ensure that your child arrives at school every day on time,
  • Read with your child every day,
  • Attend the two student-led conferences that occur during the year.These give students an additional opportunity to demonstrate their leadership abilities and mastery of standards.

I am confident that 2018-2019 will be a fantastic school year.  To all of you just beginning your journey with us, welcome to the Solano family.  Whether you are new to Solano, as I am, or returning for another year, I look forward to meeting you, seeing you, speaking with you, and working together to ensure your son or daughter’s success.

SCHOOL HOURS:  School begins each day at 8:00 a.m. and ends at 2:23 p.m.  Once again this year, every Tuesday will be an early dismissal day for teachers to participate in professional development activities.  There will be an additional shortened days or minimum days throughout the school year for parent conferences and teacher professional development.  You will be notified of these dates as they approach.

Supervision begins at 7:30 a.m., so please do not drop children off prior to 7:30.  The school is not responsible for any child dropped off prior to 7:30 a.m.  It is not safe to leave your child unsupervised in front of the school!

 

ATTENDANCE: Good attendance is crucial for a child's success in school.  Parents are responsible for seeing that children are in school every day unless they are ill or must see a doctor.  The superintendent's attendance goal is that students have no more than seven absences a year.  In order to promote good attendance, perfect attendance certificates will be awarded to students with no absences or tardies and no early outs (leaving prior to dismissal time) three times each year.  If your child is going to be absent because of illness or a doctor's appointment please call the school office at (323) 223-4291.  After an absence, you must send a note or call the office stating the reason for your child's absence as required by law.  If a child is returning to school after surgery or with casts, stitches, or crutches, they must have a doctor’s note to be readmitted.  Additionally, students with casts, stitches, or crutches may not be on the playground at recess or lunch as a safety precaution.

 

PUNCTUALITYParents are also responsible for seeing that children arrive at school on time.  Students arriving late disrupt the classroom routine, which has a negative affect on student achievement.  Habitually tardy students will be considered truant and will be referred to District officials.  Remember, students may not have any tardies to qualify for the perfect attendance award.

 

BREAKFAST AND LUNCH PROGRAM:  The District application for free and reduced-priced meals is available on-line.  Hard copies of the application will be available in the school office.  It is very important that an application is completed for each student.  Federal funding for our school is based on the completed applications.  Please complete the application even if you feel you may not qualify.  The cost for reduced price meals is 40 cents for lunch and breakfast is free.  Breakfast in the Classroom will continue this year.  Every student receives a free breakfast in his or her classroom regardless of qualifying for the free and reduced meal program.  The cost for full price lunch is $3.00 for kindergarten through 5th grade and $3.25 for 6th grade.

 

SCHOOL HOLIDAYS: The District has designated Friday, August 31st and Monday, September 3, 2018 as school holidays.  Additionally, Monday September 10th and Wednesday, September 19, 2018 is an unassigned day and school will be closed.

 

UNIFORMS:  We encourage students to wear uniforms – they help keep students safe and make getting dressed in the morning easier. A copy of the school uniform policy is included in the opening packet.  Navy blue or khaki pants, shorts, skirts, or skorts and white or navy polo shirts or any Solano tee shirt are part of the school uniform.

 

SOLANO T-SHIRTS: T-shirts with the Solano designs will be available for purchase this year.  An order form will be sent home in the next few weeks.

 

AFTER SCHOOL PLAYGROUND: Solano will continue to offer two after school playground options for students.  One program is the Beyond the Bell Youth Development Program.  This program is open to children in kindergarten through 6th grade.  Children who are enrolled in the program will participate in academic enrichment, a recreation period, and book studies.  We will also be offering the Youth Services after school playground for students in grades 1 through 6.   This is a permissive program and children may come and go as they please.  Applications for both programs are available in the office.

 

BACK-TO-SCHOOL NIGHT:  Please join us on Thursday, September 13, 2018 from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. for our annual Back-to-School night.  This evening gives you an opportunity to meet your child’s teacher, visit your child's classroom, and learn about the teacher's expectations, as well as what curriculum will be used for the year.  We hope to see you there!

 

PARENT-STUDENT HANDBOOK:  You will be receiving your copy of the Parent-Student Handbook, which details District Policy, regarding such topics as:  attendance, discipline, permits, transfers, uniforms, and dress codes. Please review these materials carefully, especially the section on bringing weapons or replica guns to school.  No weapons or replicas of such are permitted at Solano!   Please sign and return the form found at the end of the handbook indicating you have read and understand the policies.

 

ACCEPTABLE USE OF THE INTERNET POLICY:  The District requires that parents sign an Acceptable Use Policy (AUP) each year. Please discuss the use of the Internet with your child and return the form to school. Students have access to the Internet in every classroom and the library.  Students at Solano are not permitted to use the Internet without adult supervision.

 

 

SCHOOLWIDE POSITIVE BEHAVIOR INTERVENTION AND SUPPORT PLAN:  As part of our School-wide Positive Behavior Intervention and Support Plan we have three expectations for everyone:  Be Safe, Be Respectful, and Be Responsible.  Falling under each of these expectations are examples of appropriate behaviors that meet the expectation and are aligned to a specific area of the campus, such as the hallways or the playground.  A copy of these behaviors is included in the first day packet.  Please take some time to talk with your child about them.

 

PEDESTRIAN SAFETY:  The safest routes to the school have been included in this packet.  Please review them with your child and ensure that the crossing guard is utilized if your child needs to cross Solano Avenue.  Also, please stress the importance of crossing only at the marked crosswalks, crossing only on a green light with the "walk" signal, and looking both ways prior to crossing any street.  To ensure your child's safety, a responsible adult should accompany your child to and from school each day.  It is also important to remind children to avoid strangers while walking to and from school.  The safety of your child is of deep concern to all of us.

 

LOST AND FOUND:  Please be sure to place your child's name on clothing, lunch bags, etc.  This makes it much easier to find something that has been lost.  A lost and found is located in the Main Office.  At the end of each semester all unclaimed items are donated to charity.   

 

DISASTER PROCEDURES:  Solano Avenue Elementary School has taken precautions to ensure the safety of all students in case of earthquakes or other emergencies.  Be sure that you have an updated emergency card on file at all times so that we may be able to reach you or your designee whenever necessary.

 

ASBESTOS:  Our school is inspected for asbestos each six months.  A report is available in the office if you'd like to see it.

 

CELL PHONESThe district policy states: students may bring cell phones to school, but they may only use them before or after school—not during class, at recess, or at lunch.  They are to remain off and in a backpack during the instructional day.  We, at Solano Avenue Elementary School are in the process of re-evaluating our cell phone policy because smart phones can become great tools in the classroom (calculator, dictionary, thesaurus, etc.)  We will keep you posted.

 

ELECTRONIC DEVICES AND SUCH:  Electronic devices (iPods, tablets, etc.) and Yu-Gi-Oh cards are very poplar and very expensive.  They should not be brought to school for use after school.  Similarly, make-up and jewelry belong at home – not at school.  If they are out during school time, they will be confiscated and an adult will have to come to school to pick them up.  Solano is not responsible for lost or stolen electronic devices, cell phones, Yu-Gi-Oh cards, toys, jewelry, etc.

 

STANDARDS-BASED INSTRUCTION PROMOTION POLICY:  In 1998, the Board of Education enacted a policy regarding promotion to the next grade level.  Students in grades 2-6  need to meet strict standards in order to be promoted to the next grade.  More information will be available at Back-To-School Night on Thursday September 13th and during various parent meetings. Intervention classes will be available at Solano during the year for students who are in jeopardy of not meeting the standards.  Please see your child's teacher early in the school year if you have questions or concerns.

 

PARENTS – RIGHT-TO-KNOW:  All contracted teachers at Solano Avenue Elementary School are highly qualified.  As a parent of a child at Solano Avenue Elementary School, you may make a written request for information regarding the qualifications of your child’s teacher.

 

BIRTHDAYS:  At Solano we have a number of students with severe food allergies and others who do not celebrate birthdays due to religious edicts.  We also face strict nutritional guidelines regarding food served at school.  Please do not bring food items to school to celebrate your child's birthday.  I invite you to donate a book in your child's honor to his or her classroom library.  On your child's birthday you may come to school and read the book to the class.
